TWENTY-ONE

MAGGIE

Now

Something akin to unease skittered through my belly as I waited for Cole to arrive. The morning had been nearly perfect—bitter cold had given way to a sunny day that felt downright balmy compared to the weather we had been getting. Though it was just a few short days before Christmas, Cole promised that a short afternoon ride on his motorcycle would be worth it. I had my doubts as I pulled my knit hat low on my forehead.

Lottie was working at Biscuits & Honey. Lately, she was determined to make a few extra dollars, and Honey didn’t mind the extra help. I sat, bundled up in my coat, boots with thick socks, and jeans. I looked out onto the expanse of my property. Part of the reason I had fallen in love with it was the shelter of the trees and the open fields to plant my cut flower gardens. While most of Chikalu Falls seeped into the sprawling flats of Montana, I had chosen to find my sanctuary up the mountain. The winding roads to my home wove through trees and bluffs that, even in the dead of winter, were breathtaking.

Space.

Something I had craved so desperately when I’d sat in the cramped corners of my room in the rickety trailer I grew up in. I wanted Lottie to have the space and freedom to explore, discover, and feel as though her possibilities were endless. I wanted her to hold on to that feeling as long as she could.

The low rumble of Cole’s bike cut through the thin winter air. The sun was warm on my face, and as he pulled into my driveway, its warmth soaked into my bones. I pulled on my sunglasses and waved in his direction.

“Hey, doll.”

Hearing Cole Decker call me doll never ceased to send a ripple of pleasure straight to my core.

“Are you sure about this?” I gestured, palms up, at the melting snow dripping from the rooftop.

“Positive. It’s a great day for a ride.”

“Hmm . . .” The guttural noise from my throat was reserved for when I wasn’t quite believing the bullshit I was being fed.

“It’s a short ride. I promise.” Cole lifted a half-shell helmet in my direction. I grabbed it and unceremoniously plopped it on my head. It was heavy, and my neck wobbled under its weight.

“Where’s yours?” I asked.

“You’re wearing it.” Cole adjusted the strap beneath my chin to secure it. He flicked the side of the helmet playfully and grinned. “I’ll be fine, and there’s no way you’re getting on my bike without a helmet.”

He straddled the bike, ending the argument I had been gearing up for. Cole may be hot as fuck, but he still had a knack for irritating the hell out of me sometimes. I supposed old habits died hard.

Resigned, I looped a leg over the motorcycle behind him and settled his hips between my thighs. Being this close to him, I could smell the richness of his soap swirling with the leather of his jacket.
